A Transmission Bench Builder is a skilled technician who assembles, disassembles, and rebuilds transmission systems on a bench or in a controlled environment, ensuring they meet manufacturer specifications and quality standards. This role is critical in automotive repair shops, transmission rebuilders, and performance shops.
Core Responsibilities
- Assembly & Disassembly: Perform transmission assembly and disassembly according to technical specifications and industry standards
- Inspection & Diagnostics: Inspect components for wear, damage, or defects; use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify issues.
- Rebuilding: Replace or repair faulty parts (e.g., clutches, gears, seals, solenoids, torque converters, valve bodies) and reassemble transmissions.
- Testing: Conduct final testing on rebuilt transmissions using dynamometers and diagnostic software to verify proper function.
- Documentation: Keep accurate records of parts used, labor performed, and test results.
- Inventory & Ordering: Assist with managing transmission component inventory and ordering parts.
- Technical Support: Collaborate with other technicians to resolve complex transmission issues.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Not responsible for supervising employees.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using specialized tools, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to interpret technical schematics, service manuals, and diagrams.
- Knowledge of hydraulic controls, electronic sensors, and torque conversion systems.
- Physical ability to lift and handle heavy transmission components (up to 50 lbs. or more).
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Education & certifications
- Minimum: High school diploma or GED.
- Preferred: Automotive technology or mechanical engineering coursework.
- Certifications: ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or related transmission repair certifications are highly valued.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Basic computer skills.
- Basic messages communicated orally. May write brief messages and keep simple records.
- Problems encountered are simple, repetitive and generally solved by clear directions and procedures.
- Follows standard procedures with no decision making involved.
- Uses guidance/guidelines provide by supervisor/manager.
- Assignments/priorities provide by supervisor/manager.
- Good understanding of how production equipment works.
- Ability to detect potential problems with machinery.
- Knowledge of basic safety rules and precautionary measures (safety gear will be provided).
- Ability to lift heavy loads and transfer them manually.
- Good communication and teamwork.
Essential Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Typically works in a climate-controlled area with access to bench space, diagnostic tools, and safety equipment.
- May involve standing for long periods and working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
